When a loved one passes away, family members are faced with many decisions about funeral arrangements and often have questions about those arrangements and their costs. For your assistance, we have listed several suggestions that will help ensure that your loved one is cared for in the most respectful manner.

#1 - Select a Funeral Home:
Southland Crematory requests that all arrangements for cremations be handled by a
licensed funeral home. If you choose a funeral home that is not on our recommended list you may still utilize our services by telling the Funeral Director that you wish to use Southland Crematory. Charges by the funeral home will vary and are in addition to cemetery and crematory charges. If you have already made pre-arrangements with a funeral home that is not on our list, and wish to use our facilities, simply call the funeral home that has your information and advise them to mark in your pre-need file that you would like to have Southland Crematory handle your cremation.

#2 - Select a Crematory:
When selecting a crematory you should use the following criteria:

  1. What is the Crematory's reputation in the community?
  2. What is their standing with the State Board?
  3. Are their facilities clean & respectful?
  4. Do their reliability and quality control systems meet your standards?
  5. Are their facilities open to your inspection?
  6. Do they allow you to witness the cremation process?
  7. Can they meet your timing needs?
  8. Are they locally owned and operated?
  9. Does a fully licensed Funeral Director oversee the facility?
  10. Is the facility environmentally safe?
  11. Does it have a 24-hour security system?
  12. Are committal services allowed at the crematory?

#3 - Select a final disposition for the cremains

  1. interment or inurnment at a cemetery or mausoleum
  2. return to family for keepsake
  3. scatter over land in certain areas
  4. sea burial

Cremation Pricing
The standard cremation price is based on a 48 hour return from the time the remains are ready to be released by the funeral home.

  • Special handling fees may apply for expedited or oversized remains
  • Prices subject to change without notice.

Below is further information that will be needed:

Number of death certificates:
Death certificates may be needed for bank accounts, insurance, deeds or titles, trust funds, etc. Some institutions will take a photo copy, however most will require a certified copy of the death certificate. You will receive one free certificate to be sent to the
Social Security Administration. Also you can receive a free certificate for the deceased if the deceased was a United States Veteran. However, you will need to show proof of Veteran status (such as the deceased's discharge papers.)

Type of cremation container:
A "cremation container" is the container the deceased's body is placed into for cremation. Cremation containers are made from a variety of materials, ranging from reinforced cardboard to wooden caskets.

Obituary information:
What information would you like on the obituary? Keep in mind that some newspapers do not charge for placing a simple obituary; in these cases the newspaper reserves the right to edit the obituary to fit that day's edition. You can, in some newspapers, purchase a classified ad and have it placed on the obituary page -- this gives you greater influence on what is printed.

Type of Urn:
The Urn is the container into which the cremated remains are placed after the cremation process is complete. There are many different types of cremation urns available: brass, marble, glass, steel, etc. If you chose burial or inurnment in a mausoleum, it is recommended that you check with the cemetery or mausoleum for dimensions or restrictions on the types of urns to be buried or inurned prior to purchasing the urn.
